Aqara temperature sensor setup

Introduction

The Aqara temperature sensors are great for monitoring the temperature, humidity and air pressure of different parts of your home, even outside (as long as there is a Zigbee connection). They are compact and can be stuck onto any flat surface. When mounting veritcally the seonsor opening should be at the bottom (as indicated by the thermomoeter icon in the front) to protect it from dust. It can also be mounted horizontally e. g. on te under-side of a table.

Wherever you place them make sure to mark down their exact location as they may be hard to find.

Initial setup

  • Go to Home assistant and set Zigbee2MQTT (Z2M) to allow new devices to join.
  • Stick the sensor to the surface you want it to mesasure from. Make sure the location you pick offers the temperature readings you want for the coming years.
  • Remove the plastic tab so the installed battery has contact.
  • Now press button on top for 6 s until there are multiple LED flashes.
  • After a few seconds you should see notifications on Z2M indicating the new device was added.

Reset after replacing battery

The sensor has a slim and inconspicous design which runs on a CR2032 cell which can’t be recharged. One battery charge lasts about 2 years. In Home assistant you will see that the sensor will not update the measurements and the corresponding lines in the diagrams will remain on the same level.

Z2M will show the battery level in its GUI, once there is a “battery low” warning you should replace it to keep the interruption minimal.

Steps

  • Set Z2M to allow new devices to join.
  • Twist the cover counter-clockwise by about 15 degrees. You can do this even if it is attached to a wall or furniture.
  • The cover will come off, the battery might pop off as well so be prepared to catch it.
  • Place the new battery and twist the cover back on.
  • Now press button on top for 6 s until there are multiple LED flashes.
  • After a few seconds, once it is detected by Z2M, it will blink another three times after which is should be again sending data.
